Relationship-Led Growth: Building Executive Access That Actually Scales
Brooke Norton Lais, Chief Marketing Officer at Venbrook, explains why relationship-led growth requires companies to build trust long before a buying decision occurs. She shares how marketing can create opportunities for salespeople to reach the right executives and build meaningful one-to-one relationships. Brooke also explains how established C-suite relationships can create internal advocates and open access deeper within prospective accounts.
Brooke Norton Lais, Chief Marketing Officer at Venbrook, has built her career around connecting marketing to customers, revenue, and the broader business. Her early experience at Procter & Gamble taught her to view marketing through the lens of business performance and customer understanding. Today, that perspective shapes how she approaches growth in a B2B environment where relationships and trust can take months or years to develop.
For Venbrook, long sales cycles make executive access particularly important. A prospect may be months away from making a purchasing decision when the first conversation takes place. That means sales and marketing need to establish credibility, stay relevant, and create meaningful interactions well before an active opportunity appears.
“Creating situations where we can drive awareness and credibility for our brand while also building relationships is where I’m going to get the most value. When we can get our people in front of potential clients and have that one-on-one interaction, that’s when we see the best value.” – Brooke Norton Lais

Executive Relationships Can Create Access That Scales
Strong executive relationships can create opportunities beyond the original connection. Brooke describes this as a network effect. Senior leaders who have spent years building credibility within an industry may already have trusted relationships with executives inside prospective customer organizations. Those relationships can help sales teams access others who will ultimately participate in the purchasing decision.
Brooke explains, “Someone in the C-suite of our company may have a relationship with someone that’s a C-suite of a prospective customer.” That relationship can make it easier to set up meetings deeper within the organization because “we have an advocate in the C-suite already.” Executive access therefore becomes more than one valuable relationship. It can create credibility and connections throughout an account.
Trust Must Be Built Before the Buying Moment
Long sales cycles make relationship building an ongoing process, not something that begins when an opportunity enters the pipeline. Brooke explains that an insurance prospect may have just renewed a policy when the first conversation occurs, leaving another 11 months before the next buying opportunity. The relationship still needs to remain valuable and relevant throughout that period.
For Brooke, success comes when trust and credibility are already established by the time the customer eventually has a need. Marketing can support that process through email communication, LinkedIn content, educational programs, events, and other interactions that demonstrate expertise over time. The objective is to create enough awareness and credibility that when the need appears, the prospective customer already knows who to call.
Marketing Should Put Salespeople in the Right Room
Brooke believes marketing can create greater value when it combines brand awareness with direct human interaction. Venbrook uses partnerships, events, educational panels, and other experiences to put its experts in front of prospective customers. These settings allow people to learn from the company while building one-to-one relationships without every interaction becoming an immediate sales pitch.
That philosophy also guides Brooke’s investment decisions. When choosing between two conferences, she selected the one where more executives would be in the room with her salesperson. As she explains, “I need to be in the room with the decision-makers versus at a booth passing out tchotchkes.” Relationship-led marketing is therefore not simply about generating visibility. It is about creating meaningful access to the people who influence buying decisions.
Conclusion
Relationship-led growth requires companies to begin building trust before customers are actively buying. Executive relationships can create internal advocates and open access deeper within prospective accounts, while marketing can create the experiences that allow those relationships to develop over time.
Brooke Norton Lais’ perspective highlights the importance of intentionally building human connections into a B2B growth strategy. When companies consistently provide value, stay visible, and put their people in meaningful conversations with decision-makers, they increase their chances of being known, trusted, and considered when the buying moment arrives.
ELEVATING CONTENT MARKETING STANDARDS RAISES A CRUCIAL QUESTION:
Why shouldn’t the very act of creating thought leadership content also spark new conversations with in-pipeline deals, top prospects, and high-priority customers for revenue expansion? Or serve as the cornerstone for learning and applying voice-of-customer strategies? That’s the power of ABM Podcasting—engaging B2B buyers and customers in meaningful conversations that uncover essential go-to-market insights, support long sales cycles, reinforce your market perspective, build peer-level trust, and dismantle objections that kill deals.
