Mark Walker, Co-founder and CEO at Revved Up, dives into the enduring challenges of B2B lead nurturing. He explores why many companies still rely on outdated tactics despite the availability of new tools and data. He shares insights on the power of brand-building, customer alignment, and elevating sales conversations. His perspective underscores the importance of bridging the gap between strategy and execution for sustainable growth.

Lead nurturing in B2B has become an unexpected blind spot for many companies, despite massive strides in data, technology, and best practices over the last decade. Mark Walker, Co-founder and CEO at Revved Up, shares a unique perspective drawn from his experience as a four-time CRO. He argues that, even in a fast-evolving environment, many organizations continue relying on outdated processes. This gap creates barriers to sustainable growth that could easily be remedied by a more strategic focus on mid-funnel leads.

“Lead nurture gets overlooked because everyone’s focused on stuffing the top of the funnel. They chase more leads while ignoring the middle: moving leads through the funnel more effectively. You are sitting on a gold mine in your lead nurture that you are not touching.” – Mark Walker

Article: “Why B2B Lead Nurturing Hasn't Changed In The Last 10 Years?”

This article is based on an interview with Mark Walker, Co-founder and CEO at Revved Up

The Danger of Top-of-Funnel Obsession

Companies often rush to fill the top of the funnel, mistakenly placing volume over depth in their quest for new opportunities. According to Mark, “We skip the bit in between, which is: why don’t we get those leads to MQL more efficiently?” He observes how boards focus on new logos and immediate pipelines, leaving entire mid-funnel audiences neglected. “They chase more leads while ignoring the middle,” he explains, emphasizing that this oversight leads marketers to rely on the same tactics they used 10 years ago, even as technology has evolved.

By failing to refresh lead-nurturing frameworks, organizations forfeit revenue and risk stunted growth. Mark underscores that it only takes minor adjustments—smarter automation triggers, personalized messaging, ICP-based qualification—to achieve greater conversion from prospects already in the funnel.

Sales, Marketing, and the ICP Factor

Misalignment between sales and marketing remains an age-old problem. While marketers may focus on MQL definitions based on individual behaviors, sales teams expect leads who are fully ready to make a purchase. “They’re not within our ICP” becomes a recurrent refrain, leaving marketing’s top-of-funnel efforts unappreciated. Mark highlights how a common language and shared KPIs help unify teams: “If marketing succeeds, that genuinely means sales grow—and vice versa.”

By centering on who precisely fits the ICP, an organization can filter out empty leads and enhance actual SQL readiness. “Otherwise,” Mark warns, “the sales team would rather just run their own outbound, because they trust their approach more than they trust inbound marketing leads.” Aligning on the ICP and ensuring it permeates from campaign targeting to handoff criteria fosters better lead acceptance and elevates conversion rates across the revenue cycle.

Customer-Centric Growth and Existing Accounts

Mark points out how many companies are so fixated on new logos that they forget the potential locked within their existing customer base. “We’ve ignored our existing customers,” he notes, warning that boards sophisticated enough to demand more net-new pipeline rarely show similar enthusiasm for retention or expansion metrics.

The irony is that Forrester Research suggests up to 73% of B2B revenue comes from current customers. Mining that potential, Mark stresses, requires brand trust and well-orchestrated nurture programs. This approach also extends to cross-selling and upselling solutions to buyers who already have a favorable opinion of the product. Consistent engagement and listening sessions, divorced from intense “selling environments,” help reveal fresh opportunities for mutual growth.

Revisiting Customer Obsession in a Competitive Market

What truly sets an organization apart, Mark suggests, is a “deep empathy” for the audience it serves. Many B2B organizations are content with a superficial “familiarity” with their Ideal Customer Profile (ICP), ignoring the personal motivations that drive purchasing decisions. He recalls data that highlights sales reps speaking for most of the call, making it nearly impossible to uncover hidden needs. “If you can genuinely understand your customers better than your competition,” Mark explains, “you will be at a significant competitive advantage.”

This kind of understanding goes beyond simple checklists, requiring active listening and consistent follow-up, not restricted to rigid buyer journeys. Mark believes such an approach fuels brand loyalty and ensures marketing and sales operate as true partners in revenue generation.

Conclusion

Pushing past outdated B2B lead-nurture practices requires discipline and fresh perspectives. Mark Walker’s emphasis on bridging sales and marketing silos, tackling mid-funnel engagement, and refining ICP alignment leads to more than just short-term wins. It recalibrates how organizations view their prospects, ensuring the insights gained genuinely shape decisions.

Whether it’s doubling down on under-tapped leads or redirecting executive attention to existing customers, the ultimate goal is purposeful, customer-centric growth that stands the test of time. By viewing mid-funnel leads not as an afterthought but as a gold mine, companies can unlock transformative opportunities that have been right in front of them.

ELEVATING CONTENT MARKETING STANDARDS RAISES A CRUCIAL QUESTION:
Why shouldn’t the very act of creating thought leadership content also spark new conversations with in-pipeline deals, top prospects, and high-priority customers for revenue expansion? Or serve as the cornerstone for learning and applying voice-of-customer strategies? That’s the power of ABM Podcasting—engaging B2B buyers and customers in meaningful conversations that uncover essential go-to-market insights, support long sales cycles, reinforce your market perspective, build peer-level trust, and dismantle objections that kill deals.
