(6:29 Q&A Video) “Long-Term Customer Trust Creates Stronger Growth Opportunities”

In this 6:29 video, Christine Ravanat explains why meaningful customer conversations should begin long before buyers are ready to purchase. She shares how understanding business context builds trust and strengthens executive relationships over time. She also explains why authentic curiosity creates better opportunities than leading with a sales pitch.

Many B2B organizations invest heavily in improving sales conversations, yet those conversations often begin after buyers have already narrowed their list of potential suppliers. By then, much of the decision-making has already taken place. Christine Ravanat, Group CMO and Executive Committee Member at Expleo Group, believes sustainable growth starts much earlier by developing authentic relationships that help organizations understand customers long before a purchasing decision is made.

Rather than leading with products or solutions, she encourages leaders to become genuinely curious about their customers’ business environment, priorities, and long-term challenges. Organizations that consistently earn trust become the ones buyers remember when new opportunities emerge.

“Having a conversation that is not related to what you’re trying to sell, but gives you information on the environment in which your customer operates, is going to provide you with tons of information that helps you do the next sale.” – Christine Ravanat

Article: "Long-Term Customer Trust Creates Stronger Growth Opportunities”

This article is based on an interview with Christine Ravanat, Group CMO and Executive Committee Member at Expleo Group

Meaningful Customer Conversations Start Before Selling

Many organizations approach customer conversations with a specific product or solution already in mind. While that may help qualify immediate opportunities, it often limits the depth of insight that can be gained. Christine believes the most valuable conversations are the ones that focus on understanding the customer’s business environment, strategic priorities, and evolving challenges. These discussions create a much stronger foundation for future partnerships by uncovering needs that may not be apparent in a traditional sales conversation.

Christine explains, “We should be asking questions that give us information on the bigger picture.” She also says, “Having a conversation that is not related to what you’re trying to sell, but a conversation that is giving you information on the environment your customer is in, is going to provide you with tons of little bits of information.” Those insights help organizations better understand how to create value while positioning themselves naturally for future opportunities, rather than forcing an immediate sales discussion.

Authentic Curiosity Builds Stronger Customer Trust

Trust is rarely built through polished presentations or carefully rehearsed sales messages. It develops when customers feel genuinely understood and believe their success matters as much as the transaction itself. Christine encourages leaders to approach every interaction with curiosity rather than persuasion. By becoming better listeners, organizations create more meaningful relationships and gain a clearer understanding of the issues customers face every day.

Christine explains, “You kind of need to forget about what you want to sell and really have the deep will to understand where your customer sits, what state they are in, and what problems they’re facing.” She also emphasizes, “If you ask the right questions, people like to talk. You need to be interested in what they’re telling you. There needs to be some sort of authentic relationship between two people.” When customers experience genuine interest rather than a sales agenda, trust grows naturally, creating stronger relationships that extend well beyond a single opportunity.

Long-Term Relationships Create Competitive Advantage

Enterprise buying decisions often take months or even years to develop. Organizations that consistently build executive relationships throughout that process create a significant competitive advantage because they become familiar, trusted, and relevant before purchasing discussions begin. Rather than waiting for opportunities to appear, successful organizations invest continuously in building meaningful connections across multiple stakeholders.

Christine explains, “If you don’t find a way to come into those people’s minds way, way, way ahead, there’s just zero chance you’re even going to be on the list of potential suppliers.” She also adds, “It really needs to come from the top. It needs long-term investment in terms of relationship touchpoints with different people, not just the one who’s going to buy, but the ones who work on the strategy.” Organizations that consistently invest in executive relationships earn stronger visibility, deeper trust, and greater influence when important buying decisions are eventually made.

Conclusion

Trust has become one of the most valuable assets in B2B growth. Christine demonstrates that organizations build stronger customer relationships by investing time in understanding customers long before they begin evaluating solutions. Authentic conversations, thoughtful questions, and consistent engagement create a level of credibility that no marketing campaign or sales presentation can replace.

As buying journeys become more complex, organizations that focus on building trust rather than simply pursuing transactions will be better positioned for sustainable growth. The companies that invest in relationships today will become the trusted partners customers remember when tomorrow’s opportunities emerge.
