Your Customers Are Now Your Most Important Marketing Channel

Michael Ciancio, Chief Marketing Officer at Expert Institute, shares why customers have become the most important marketing channel in modern B2B growth. He explains how trust, customer voice, and consistent messaging shape buying decisions long before a prospect speaks with sales. The conversation highlights the growing influence of AI search and why authentic customer insights now outperform traditional marketing content. Michael also outlines how internal alignment creates the foundation for sustainable growth.

Michael Ciancio, Chief Marketing Officer at Expert Institute, believes many organizations are solving the wrong growth problems. Companies often assume they have a pipeline, brand, or budget issue. In reality, most growth challenges begin with a lack of clarity and alignment. When leadership teams are not aligned on who they serve, what problems they solve, and how they create value, every department begins to optimize for different goals.

At the same time, the buying journey has fundamentally changed. Buyers increasingly rely on AI tools and independent research long before engaging with sales teams. This shift has elevated customer voice, trust, and authentic expertise to a level that traditional marketing tactics struggle to match. Michael explains why customers have become the most important marketing channel and how organizations can build sustainable growth by focusing on clarity, consistency, and trust.

“It’s the highest leverage investment in the entire marketing function right now that the teams that do real voice of customer work and build those specific messages will consistently outperform the ones that don’t.” — Michael Ciancio

Internal Alignment Is the Foundation of Sustainable Growth

Michael believes that most organizations misdiagnose their growth challenges. What appears to be a pipeline issue or a marketing problem often traces back to a lack of leadership alignment. When executives have different interpretations of the company’s priorities, every department begins to optimize for separate objectives. Marketing focuses on one outcome, sales pursues another, and product teams may prioritize initiatives that do not align with customer needs.

Michael explains that alignment problems are often invisible. Leadership teams may leave a strategy meeting believing they are aligned while carrying very different understandings of the company’s goals and priorities. As a result, teams work hard but fail to reinforce one another. Marketing generates leads that sales does not value. Sales closes customers who have customer success struggles to retain. Product teams build capabilities that customers never requested. Michael summarizes this challenge clearly when he says, “Most growth problems are just alignment problems in disguise.” He believes sustainable growth begins when leadership creates a shared understanding of the customer, the problem being solved, and the company’s path to market success.

Customer Voice Has Become the Most Powerful Marketing Asset

According to Michael, the buying journey has fundamentally changed. Buyers now rely on AI platforms and independent research to form opinions before they ever engage with a vendor. This means companies no longer control the narrative the way they once did. Instead, trust is increasingly built through customer experiences, expert perspectives, and authentic conversations that exist outside traditional marketing channels.

Michael advocates for intentionally interviewing customers and subject matter experts to capture the language they use to describe real challenges and solutions. These conversations create content that resonates with both buyers and AI systems. He explains that “The teams that do real voice of customer work and build those specific messages will consistently outperform the ones that don’t.” More importantly, this approach fosters understanding and connection with potential buyers. Michael notes, “When the buyer has that feeling of being seen, it’s a foundation of trust. It’s the thing that makes someone think, ‘These people get it,’ before they’ve ever spoken to a salesperson.” In a marketplace where trust is increasingly difficult to earn, customer voice has become one of the most valuable competitive advantages available.

Consistency Creates Trust Across the Entire Customer Journey

Trust is not built through a single campaign or piece of content. Michael believes trust is created when buyers encounter the same message and experience across every interaction with a company. Unfortunately, many organizations unintentionally create confusion by allowing different departments to communicate different versions of the company’s value proposition.

Marketing content, sales presentations, customer success conversations, and product messaging may each be well executed individually. However, when these touchpoints tell different stories, trust begins to erode. Buyers become uncertain about what the company actually does and how it creates value. Michael argues that consistency is one of the most underrated growth drivers because it influences every stage of the customer journey. He advises organizations to “Lock the core message so tightly that every single touch point, paid, organic, sales, CS, tells the exact same story.” Consistency is especially important in an AI-driven environment because AI systems synthesize information exactly as it appears. Organizations that maintain a clear and unified message strengthen their credibility with both buyers and the platforms that influence modern purchasing decisions.

Conclusion

Michael Ciancio’s perspective highlights a simple but powerful reality. Sustainable growth begins inside the organization. Companies that align their leadership, understand their customers, and communicate consistently create a stronger foundation for long-term success.

As buyers increasingly rely on AI systems, peer perspectives, and independent research, trust has become one of the most important factors influencing purchasing decisions. Organizations that invest in customer voice, maintain consistent messaging, and build alignment across teams will be better positioned to earn that trust. In Michael’s view, customers are no longer just the audience for marketing efforts. They have become one of the most important marketing channels a company can have.

ELEVATING CONTENT MARKETING STANDARDS RAISES A CRUCIAL QUESTION:
Why shouldn’t the very act of creating thought leadership content also spark new conversations with in-pipeline deals, top prospects, and high-priority customers for revenue expansion? Or serve as the cornerstone for learning and applying voice-of-customer strategies? That’s the power of ABM Podcasting—engaging B2B buyers and customers in meaningful conversations that uncover essential go-to-market insights, support long sales cycles, reinforce your market perspective, build peer-level trust, and dismantle objections that kill deals.
