Title: "Modern CRO Leadership: Navigating Trust and Competition"
This article is based on an interview with Andrea Kayal, Chief Revenue Officer at Help Scout
Introduction
Many organizations invest heavily in sales, marketing, and customer success initiatives, yet sustainable growth often remains elusive. The challenge is rarely a lack of effort. More often, it is a lack of alignment and trust across the customer journey. Andrea Kayal, Chief Revenue Officer at Help Scout, believes that modern growth depends on creating clarity inside the organization while building credibility outside of it.
Having served as a CMO three times before becoming a CRO, Andrea brings a unique perspective to revenue leadership. Her experience across marketing, sales, customer success, and go-to-market strategy has shaped a philosophy centered on accountability, customer trust, and long-term business value.
Alignment Creates Better Revenue Outcomes
Many companies talk about alignment, but far fewer create systems that consistently support it. Andrea believes alignment becomes effective when teams establish clear responsibilities and measurable expectations. Rather than relying on assumptions, organizations need formal agreements that define what success looks like and who owns each stage of the process.
One example Andrea shared involved creating a service level agreement between sales and marketing. The teams worked together to define exactly what constituted a qualified opportunity before it entered the pipeline. This removed ambiguity and reduced unnecessary debate. As Andrea explained, “We were very tightly aligned about what success meant in either organization, and then a lot of noise went away from both teams.”
Once ownership became clear, marketing focused on pipeline quality while sales focused on conversion. The result was greater accountability and more predictable outcomes. Andrea also emphasized that “By simply creating those guardrails, you free up so much internal discussion and question marks and back and forth that need to happen between the teams below you.”
Trust Has Become Marketing’s Most Important Responsibility
One of Andrea’s most compelling ideas is that the traditional gap between marketing and sales may not actually exist. Instead, she believes marketing owns a much larger portion of the buyer journey than many organizations acknowledge. Buyers are conducting extensive research before ever speaking with a sales representative. They are gathering information from peers, review sites, thought leadership content, and, increasingly, AI-powered search tools.
This shift places trust-building squarely within the marketing function. Andrea stated, “The nurturing journey, the intent journey, the trust-building journey is a marketing job.” In her view, marketing’s role is to build enough confidence and credibility that buyers willingly engage with sales. Only then does the sales team step in to help buyers understand why the company is the right solution. As Andrea explained, “Marketing built the trust. Sales need to now really convince them why us.” Organizations that embrace this approach create stronger buyer relationships and improve the effectiveness of every downstream revenue activity.
Human-Centered Brands Win in Competitive Markets
As AI continues to lower barriers to entry, new competitors can enter markets faster than ever before. Products can be developed quickly, features can be copied, and pricing can be matched. Andrea believes trust has become one of the few sustainable advantages that competitors cannot easily replicate.
She points to Help Scout’s years of thought leadership, customer education, and positive customer experiences as examples of assets that compound over time. Andrea explained, “To recreate all the trust a 14-year-old SaaS business has created in the market is hard.” That trust has been built through consistent delivery, educational content, and customer advocacy.
She also emphasized the importance of maintaining a human approach in an increasingly automated world. “We will continue to prioritize human-developed thought leadership and content because people can recognize a difference today, and they value that.” While technology remains important, Andrea believes buyers still respond most strongly to authenticity, expertise, and genuine customer value.
Conclusion
The strongest growth organizations understand that success is not created by individual departments operating independently. Sustainable growth requires alignment, trust, and a shared commitment to delivering value. Andrea’s perspective highlights the importance of creating clear ownership within the organization while simultaneously building credibility with customers.
As buying behavior continues to evolve, companies that focus on trust and enterprise value will be better positioned for long-term success. The organizations that win will not simply generate more leads or close more deals. They will create environments where customers, employees, and stakeholders consistently believe in the value they deliver.
ELEVATING CONTENT MARKETING STANDARDS RAISES A CRUCIAL QUESTION:
Why shouldn’t the very act of creating thought leadership content also spark new conversations with in-pipeline deals, top prospects, and high-priority customers for revenue expansion? Or serve as the cornerstone for learning and applying voice-of-customer strategies? That’s the power of ABM Podcasting—engaging B2B buyers and customers in meaningful conversations that uncover essential go-to-market insights, support long sales cycles, reinforce your market perspective, build peer-level trust, and dismantle objections that kill deals.
