Highlights

Introduction

YouTube Short

7:10 | How Customer Pain Points Bring ABM Back Into Focus

“If we choose marketing for a living, we need to understand the customer better than anybody else in the room. We end up declining a little in the voice of the customer because account-based marketing is a maze where you pick apart so many roles within the customer and lose the spark of the mission-critical pain point. Clients say everybody wants to make more money or save costs, but it has to be very specific to that segment. That's the core of my ABM for that client.”

4:03 | Conversational Messaging Protects Brands From AI Content Sameness

“I've actually worked with my team to make sure we don't use AI to create our messages. We can use AI in many ways, but it flattens your story. As a research and advisory firm, we ensure that none of our experts, whether they're experts in workplace features, workplace, or white paper creation, use AI. It is forbidden to use AI.”

7:30 | Human Communication Builds Trust Across Buyers And Teams

“To this day, people do not recognize that communication is 90% body language, facial expressions, gestures, and tone of voice. If you are going to be conversational, it has to be written not in the type of formality that we all learned in school. It has to be like I am speaking to you.”

6:06 | CMOs Earn Influence By Owning Customer Truth First

“Understanding the customer better than anyone else is a weapon that you use internally to build respect and build credibility. You have to not only understand the client or customer, but also You have to be a great evangelist. You cannot be behind the scenes. You have got to be the one leading from the front, internally and externally.”

3:46 | Emotional Storytelling Creates Stronger Buyer Connection Faster

“There is so much interesting technology, and some of it can help out, but it does not so much help you on the human side. You have to express humanity, but you have to have humanity. It's like when you're working with people, and you have to care about the people on your team. You have to act like you care about them, and then you really do have to care about them. People will know.”

2:05 | Empowered Teams Move Faster With Better Market Insights

“I do not give any action items to my team. I do not give any directives. I force them to think for themselves, to come up with insights, not data. That empowerment, I know it sounds so old school, but the team blossoms and flourishes.”

Title: "ABM Reality Check: Why Conventional Approaches Fail"

This article is based on an interview with Paul Gottsegen, CMO and President at ISG

Introduction

Most B2B organizations have invested heavily in automation, personalization platforms, and AI-driven outreach over the last several years. Yet many marketing leaders are discovering that more technology has not automatically created stronger buyer relationships. In many cases, it has done the opposite. Messaging feels repetitive, conversations feel artificial, and buyers are becoming more selective about who they trust.
Paul Gottsegen, CMO and President at ISG, believes modern marketing teams are facing a growing gap in conversational messaging. While AI can improve efficiency and execution, Paul argues that authentic human communication remains the foundation of meaningful ABM engagement and long-term growth.

AI Efficiency Cannot Replace Human Communication

Paul believes many organizations are unintentionally flattening their messaging by relying too heavily on AI-generated communication. While the technology can create polished content quickly, buyers are increasingly recognizing when messaging lacks originality, personality, and emotional connection.

“I’ve actually worked with my team to make sure we don’t use AI to create our messages,” Paul explains. “We can use AI in a lot of different ways, but what it does is it flattens your story.”

That distinction matters because enterprise buyers are overwhelmed with generic outreach. According to Paul, marketing leaders cannot afford to sound like everyone else in the market. Human-created messaging creates differentiation by reflecting genuine understanding, an authentic perspective, and a conversational tone.

“There’s something about the way people communicate that AI can’t do yet,” Paul says. “Right now it’s so obvious when something’s created by AI.”

Instead of replacing marketers, Paul sees AI as a tool that should support operational efficiency. His team uses AI to connect analytics, streamline workflows, and accelerate execution while preserving human-created messaging at the center of the strategy. That balance allows ISG to scale intelligently without sacrificing trust or differentiation.

Customer Pain Points Should Guide Every ABM Strategy

One of Paul’s strongest arguments centers around the idea that many ABM programs have become overly complicated. Instead of deeply understanding customer challenges, organizations often divide their messaging across countless personas and are fragmented in their assumptions about buying groups.

“I’m not a believer in this whole concept of personas,” Paul explains. “I actually think that’s a detriment.”

Paul argues that marketing leaders should focus less on surface-level personalization and more on deeply understanding the mission-critical pain points that define a company’s growth challenges. According to him, that requires marketers to actively research customers, participate in conversations, and understand the business realities shaping decision-making inside target accounts.

“If we choose to be in marketing for a living, we need to understand the customer better than anybody else in the room,” Paul says.

That mindset shifts ABM away from broad segmentation exercises and toward a highly relevant understanding of customers. Rather than building separate messaging for each stakeholder title, Paul believes marketers should rally around the central business challenge affecting the organization.

“It’s a maze when you start to do account-based marketing, and you pick apart so many different roles within the customer,” Paul explains. “At the same time, you lose that spark of what is the mission-critical pain point.”

CMOs Must Lead Customer Understanding Internally

Paul also believes the CMO role carries far greater responsibility than campaign execution or brand management. In his view, marketing leaders must proactively become the organization’s strongest advocate for customer understanding.

“Understanding the customer better than anyone else is a weapon that you use internally to build respect and build credibility,” Paul says.

That responsibility becomes especially important because most organizations struggle with internal alignment. Different departments often operate under different assumptions about what customers need, creating fragmented execution and inconsistent priorities across the business.

Paul believes CMOs are uniquely positioned to solve that challenge because they have visibility into customer conversations, market trends, and buyer pain points. However, marketing leaders must actively step into that role rather than wait for permission.

“You can’t be behind the scenes,” Paul explains. “You’ve got to be the one leading from the front, internally and externally.”

For Paul, effective marketing leadership combines customer understanding with organizational evangelism. CMOs must not only gather market intelligence but also translate that insight into a strategic direction that aligns teams around customer truth.

Conclusion

The future of ABM may depend less on the sophistication of automation and more on an organization’s ability to communicate like real humans again. Buyers still respond to authenticity, emotional connection, and genuine understanding of their business challenges. Technology can support those goals, but it cannot replace them.

Paul Gottsegen’s perspective offers an important reminder for modern marketing leaders. Growth does not come from simply increasing the number of personalization tokens, expanding persona libraries, or automating every touchpoint. Sustainable growth comes from deeply understanding customers, communicating in a conversational way, and building trust through authentic interactions.

Organizations that combine AI efficiency with human-centered communication will likely create stronger differentiation as enterprise buyers continue filtering out generic marketing noise. The companies that truly understand customer pain points and communicate with authenticity may ultimately become the ones buyers trust most.

ELEVATING CONTENT MARKETING STANDARDS RAISES A CRUCIAL QUESTION:
Why shouldn’t the very act of creating thought leadership content also spark new conversations with in-pipeline deals, top prospects, and high-priority customers for revenue expansion? Or serve as the cornerstone for learning and applying voice-of-customer strategies? That’s the power of ABM Podcasting—engaging B2B buyers and customers in meaningful conversations that uncover essential go-to-market insights, support long sales cycles, reinforce your market perspective, build peer-level trust, and dismantle objections that kill deals.
