(5:37 Q&A Video) “Valuable Peer Conversations Create Trust Before the Pitch”

In this 5:37 video, Charlie Harris explains why executives shouldn’t measure conversations only by immediate sales results. Open discussions give leaders a rare view of what buyers are trying to solve. She shares how peer learning and useful insights create value across a longer buying journey. Trust grows when every interaction offers more than a product pitch.

Enterprise buyers do not need more unsolicited sales outreach. They need useful conversations with people who understand the challenges they are working through. For B2B companies using an ABM strategy, access to senior executives is limited, buying cycles are longer, and a single meeting rarely creates a commercial opportunity.

Charlie Harris, Chief Marketing Officer at Connective3, explains why executive events and peer discussions can create a better path to trust. The goal is not to abandon sales. It is to earn the right to have a sales conversation by creating value well before the pitch.

“If you can take valuable experiences away at each of those eight touchpoints that aren’t, ‘Here’s our product,’ then you have a much stronger chance of converting that client when you do get to pitch stage. It has to be that kind of more protracted sales cycle, and hopefully we’ve found a way of making valuable connections at each of those eight touchpoints.” – Charlie Harris

Article: "Valuable Peer Conversations Create Trust Before the Pitch"

This article is based on an interview with Charlie Harris, Chief Marketing Officer at Connective3

Create Conversations Buyers Actually Want to Join

Senior executives are unlikely to make time for a cold call asking them to explain their biggest challenges. Charlie makes the point clearly. “If it was me and somebody rang me on the phone, random day of the week, and started asking me what my challenges as a marketer are, I don’t have time for that or interest in that.”

A well-designed peer event creates a different dynamic. It lets executives discuss what is working, what is not, and how others are approaching shared issues. Charlie recalls speaking with a marketing director at Nike and beginning with candor. “We’re too small to fulfill what you need.” That removed the pressure of an immediate sale and opened a more useful conversation. Trust begins when the buyer does not feel managed toward a pitch.

Turn Customer Insight Into Wider Market Value

A valuable executive discussion should not end when the event does. Charlie explains that the insights can improve strategy and create relevant thought leadership. “The insights you can take away are so valuable.” The key is to share collective challenges without exposing confidential information or treating a customer conversation as content inventory.

Charlie also sees value in showing that a company understands buyers across sectors and company sizes. “There are a lot of ways in which you can take that content, that conversation, and activate it other than just a cold selling environment.” For ABM teams, these insights can inform account messaging, executive outreach, content themes, and conversations with other target buyers facing comparable challenges.

Make Every Touchpoint Earn Its Place

Buying journeys rarely move from an introduction to a signed contract. Charlie references a study suggesting that B2B buyers need eight touchpoints before they convert. Those interactions can include a LinkedIn post, a peer event, or another useful exchange. The important principle is that each contact must feel valuable to the buyer.

Charlie says, “If you can take valuable experiences away at each of those eight touchpoints that aren’t, ‘Here’s our product,’ then you have a much stronger chance of converting that client when you do get to pitch stage.” This is especially important for enterprise accounts, where trust must develop over time. “It has to be that kind of more protracted sales cycle, and hopefully we’ve found a way of making valuable connections at each of those eight touchpoints.”

Conclusion

B2B leaders cannot rely on a single high-pressure sales moment to create enterprise demand. The stronger approach is to create places where executives can learn from peers, speak honestly, and leave with something useful. Those conversations help a company understand its market while proving that it can contribute value before asking for anything in return.

For ABM organizations, this creates a practical standard for every interaction. Ask whether the buyer would consider the touchpoint valuable even if they never purchased. If the answer is yes, the relationship has a far better chance of being trusted when the formal buying conversation begins.

ELEVATING CONTENT MARKETING STANDARDS RAISES A CRUCIAL QUESTION:
Why shouldn’t the very act of creating thought leadership content also spark new conversations with in-pipeline deals, top prospects, and high-priority customers for revenue expansion? Or serve as the cornerstone for learning and applying voice-of-customer strategies? That’s the power of ABM Podcasting—engaging B2B buyers and customers in meaningful conversations that uncover essential go-to-market insights, support long sales cycles, reinforce your market perspective, build peer-level trust, and dismantle objections that kill deals.
